Dr. Rita Nguyen is a residency-trained optometrist with advanced training in ocular disease, surgical co-management, and the diagnosis and treatment of complex eye conditions. She has particular clinical interests in glaucoma and dry eye disease, two areas in which early diagnosis and individualized care can have a significant impact on a patient's long-term vision and quality of life.

Dr. Nguyen earned her Doctor of Optometry degree from SUNY College of Optometry in New York City after graduating cum laude from Rutgers University with a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science and a minor in Psychology. She went on to complete an ACOE-accredited residency in Ocular Disease and Refractive/Ocular Surgery at Virginia Eye Consultants.

During her residency, Dr. Nguyen received extensive experience managing complex anterior and posterior segment disease and co-managing patients across cataract, refractive surgery, glaucoma, cornea, retina, and oculoplastics. Dr. Nguyen is also laser certified in Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT), Laser Peripheral Iridotomy (LPI), and YAG Capsulotomy. In addition to patient care, she has contributed to clinical education through case presentations and research presented at the American Academy of Optometry Annual Meeting, the Southeastern Congress of Optometry, and the East-West Summit.

Service has been an important part of Dr. Nguyen's career. She has volunteered at the Western Tidewater Free Clinic and held leadership roles with Student Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity, helping provide eye care to underserved communities locally and internationally, including clinical service trips to Grenada and Panama.

Outside of the office, Dr. Nguyen enjoys staying active through working out, hiking, and rock climbing. She also loves traveling, photography, trying new foods, exploring new places, and spending time with family and friends.
