The Nasties

List of toxic offenders

  • Argirilene (aggravates/causes dry eye symptoms)

  • Benzalkonium chloride (a preservative that is toxic to cells of the human ocular surface)

  • Carbon black (a poorly soluble particle that is toxic and thought to cause cancer)

  • Chlorphenesin (toxic to meibomian glands and cornea/conjunctival cells)

  • Formaldehyde (a preservative meant to prevent microbial growth, but is toxic to human cells)

  • Isopropyl cloprostenate (prostaglandin analog)

  • Parabens (interferes with mechanisms that promote corneal cell survival)

  • Phenoxyethanol (toxic to meibomian glands and cornea/conjunctival cells)

  • Retinols (increases cell death and alters gene expression)

  • Terpinen-4-ol (meibomian gland toxicity)

Stats About Toxins

Conventional eye makeup and skincare products contain a litany of preservatives, compounds, and ingredients that can be especially harmful. Although the use of these offending substances helps the cosmetics last longer and look nicer when applied, research suggests that these artificial nasties are more bad than good for both eye and skin health.

Preservatives like benzalkonium chloride and formaldehyde are commonly used in eye cosmetics to keep bacteria from growing in them, making them last longer both on the shelf and on your face. However, these two ingredients have been demonstrated to be highly toxic to skin cells—particularly in the areas in and around your eyes.

Carbon black, another eye makeup ingredient that gives the products their stark black color, is a poorly soluble particle that gets into your skin and is thought to be a carcinogen.

Other ingredients like chlorphenesin, parabens, Argireline, phenoxyethanol, and retinol have a directly negative reaction with the meibomian glands that produce the oils for your tears. This interference disrupts corneal cell survival and makes your tears less effective, leading to symptoms of dry eye.
